3 great things to do in Marbella for sports fans
01-12-20223 great things to do in Marbella for sports fans
Marbella is a trendy holiday destination, especially for those looking to put our feet up and relax. This Andalusian town of around 150,000 people offers beautiful Mediterranean beaches, with the Sierra Blanca mountains providing an equally impressive backdrop. But what if you haven't come to Marbella to unwind? Fortunately, there are countless exciting things for sports fans to experience.
Playing sports like tennis and golf on holiday is a great way to unwind and exercise simultaneously. However, you can also enjoy sports in Marbella without physical exertion. For example, sports bettors may place wagers on countless worldwide sports. This heightens your sporting knowledge, with things like NFL picks enhancing your overall understanding. And the best thing? You can do all this from the beach!
Nevertheless, there are several key places to visit if you're keen to enjoy the Marbella sporting experience. You could visit the Estadio Municipal de Marbella, the local team Marbella Fútbol Club stadium, or have a drink in one of the many sports bars in the famous Costa del Sol tourist destination. Stay with us for three of the best things to do in Marbella for sports fans. You won't regret it!
Visit the Estadio Municipal de Marbella
Marbella isn't mainly well known for its soccer club, but the Estadio Municipal de Marbella is worth seeing. This 7,300-capacity venue is the home of Marbella FC, who currently play in the Tercera Federación - Group 9. You're unlikely to see the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona play here any time soon, but there are still high-quality soccer matches on offer almost every weekend.
Originally called Unión Deportiva Marbella, the town's current football team was founded in 1997. It came after the original club. Club Atlético Marbella was dissolved. Success has been limited, with the team struggling to break into Spain's top leagues. Rufino Segovia, a fast and skillful forward known for scoring goals when it really counts, is arguably the most important player in the current team.
The Estadio Municipal de Marbella isn't just a soccer stadium. You can taste some seriously special musical history when visiting, as global superstars such as Michael Jackson and Prince have all played here in the past. It's particularly notable for being the location for Queen's penultimate show with Freddie Mercury.
The stadium is easily accessible via bus, although one of the beauties of Marbella is its small size. You can walk from famous beaches such as Puerto Banus, Playa de Rio Real or Playa de la Bajadilla to the Estadio Municipal de Marbella in 15 minutes. Take advantage of this iconic Costa del Sol, Spain, sporting destination.
Hit one of the many sports bars
Tourists can enjoy several quality sports bars in Marbella. These bars are trendy among football fans, giving visitors from the UK and elsewhere an easy way to watch the Premier League or La Liga. Venues like The Tavern bring the classic British pub experience to Marbella's old town, while the Claddagh Irish Bar is your one-stop shop for everything about the Emerald Isle.
Don't miss Linekers Bar, an establishment that may or may not be named after the legendary footballer of the same name. Going to a sports bar in Marbella is arguably the best way to enjoy global sports. They have numerous TVs for easy viewing and are fantastic places for making new friends on holiday.
These venues are also some of the only places in Spain where visitors can watch slightly rarer sports, such as football or baseball. Most have top-of-the-range TV subscriptions, allowing US tourists to scratch the itch with regular MLS, NBA, NFL and MLB games.
Play at Marbella Golf Country Club
Marbella and the whole of Southern Spain are famous for their pristine golf clubs and perfect weather. Playing golf at places like the Marbella Golf Country Club is a no-brainer for sports fans looking to get active while they're away. Designed by the famous Robert Trent Jones Sr, this 18-hole course ranks among the best in Europe.
Players get a variety of long and short holes to play, all complemented by a distant view of the glittering Mediterranean. Although the Marbella Golf Country Club is a wonderful course to play, its picturesque surroundings and architecture are what really sets it apart from the rest. It certainly is one to put high on your list of places to visit in Marbella.
