What's Aging You? The Top 8 Signs of Ageing and the Treatments to Tackle Them
02-06-2016“Time and tide wait for no man,” or so the saying goes. It's true that we can't stop ageing, but with today's advanced cosmetic treatments we can slow it down.
There are a number of factors that contribute to how old we look and we have compiled a list of those our patients most commonly wish to address.
The good news is that many of these conditions can be improved with minimally invasive procedures. If you feel any of the following are blighting your appearance, read on to discover how we can help you turn back the hands of time…
1. Wrinkles
Most people regard wrinkles as the number one sign of ageing. They usually start to appear in our early 30s when the skin stops laying down collagen.
They often start to appear around the eyes, first as fine lines and later becoming deeper wrinkles, or ‘crows feet’, as we enter our 50s and 60s. Furrows on the forehead and between the eyebrows are also a common complaint.
Botox injections are an effective way to treat these lines and wrinkles. It works by weakening the underlying muscle and making it harder for you to pull those facial expressions that create the wrinkles such as squinting and scowling.
However, sensitively administered, it won't prevent you from being able to show a normal range of emotions – so no need to worry about ‘frozen face’! The results can last from between 4-6 months.
2. Sagging Jowls
In addition to wrinkling, as we age our facial skin starts to lose its elasticity and this means it can begin to sag.
The forehead drops, skin can collect above the eyes, sometimes obscuring the eyelids and the cheeks may hang down creating a jowly appearance.
A facelift can restore the facial tissues to their youthful positions and doesn't have to leave you looking like you're stood in a wind tunnel!
There are different methods that can be used dependent on the extent of excess skin. For example, minimally invasive short-scar technique involves making just two small incisions in the skin folds around the ears and can be performed on an outpatient basis.
3. Eye Bags
Bags under your eyes (or hanging over them) can make you look tired and old.
Blepharoplasty can help you banish eye bags for good.
The procedure involves removing excess skin and sucking out the herniated ocular fat that protrudes beneath the eye and creates a pouchy appearance. The treatment can also combine fat grafting, where fat is transplanted to fill in under-eye hollows.
Blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia and the scars are invisible, with incisions made either in the lash line or on the inside of the eyelid.
4. Turkey Neck
No-one wants to look like a turkey, but unfortunately loose neck skin is a common condition of ageing. It can also be exacerbated by weight loss.
A well-defined jawline can take years off your appearance and can be best achieved with a neck lift. A neck lift can be carried out in conjunction with a facelift or as a stand-alone treatment.
A neck lift involves the tightening of the underlying muscles creating a sling effect, while excess fat is removed by liposuction and skin is pulled taught. Incisions are hidden behind the ears and under the chin.
5. Spotty, Veiny Hands
Even if our faces look good, our hands can betray our true age! As we get older, the skin starts to wrinkle and show the effects of sun damage displaying brown age spots and pigmentation.
In addition, where we lose fat in our hands the veins, knuckles, and tendons can become prominent. There are two key things we can do to tackle hand ageing; the first is a chemical peel to remove the top layers of skin and stimulate collagen production.
Secondly, we can use injectable filler or fat grafting to plump out the backs of the hands and fill in wrinkles.
Both treatments are non-surgical cosmetic procedures, performed on an outpatient basis and require no downtime
6. Thinning Lips
Lips lose volume as we age becoming gradually thinner, this can also cause wrinkling around the lips (smokers lines).
Injectable filler or fat grafting can be used to plump them back up again and restore your youthful, line-free, pout. The secret is not to ‘over correct’ and make them too large.
By simply filling out where you have lost volume we can make you look younger without it being obvious you have had a surgical procedure.
Filler can last for around a year, while fat transplant can give you a permanent solution.
7. Gaunt Face
Fat grafting can also be used to restore facial volume generally, filling out hollow cheeks, and giving you back a youthful plumpness.
Fat can be harvested from the tummy, waist or thighs through a fine, needle-like cannula and then reintroduced into your face.
Properly implanted, the fat finds a blood supply and becomes permanent living tissue.
Fat can also be used to fill in the marionette lines around the mouth, as well as wrinkles on the cheeks, around the eyes and on the forehead, totally reinvigorating the face.
8. Sagging Breasts
Women's breasts often start to change shape after having children and this is exacerbated with age and weight change.
Breasts that droop not only make your physique appear older; they can also dramatically dent your confidence. A breast lift can restore sagging breasts by tightening the muscle structure, lifting the tissue and removing excess skin.
It can be combined with implants to create perfect, perky breasts that will be the envy of women half your age!
