Harvard Medical School in a Surgical Leadership program on September 15, 2019. The graduation ceremony took place at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center in Boston, MA, USA.

The Ocean Clinic Marbella founder and head surgeon of Ocean Clinic Dr. Kai Kaye has recently graduated from Harvard Medical School in a Surgical Leadership program.

1. What is all about Harvard Medical School and the Surgical Leadership program?

This postgraduate (HMS) certificate program is a step into and succeed in leadership positions and excel as heads of departments, divisions, projects and institutions at large. This course provides intensive education for surgeons to build the nontechnical, executive skills necessary to successfully lead departments, divisions, programs and, ultimately, organizations.

2. Why did you decide to go to this program? What was your aim to learn from this program?

As Ocean Clinic did grow substantially over the last years with more staff to manage, opening of new clinic ventures in Madrid & Zurich, I felt it was necessary to widen my scope as leader of a growing clinical brand to be better prepared for the larger responsibility and the new challenges which come along with it.

3. How long did you study to get this program certificate? You have busy surgeons schedules, how did you manage to do it? Was it Online or also practical?

The Surgical Leadership Program was designed with surgeons busy schedules in mind. It was a 1-year degree program delivered through weekly interactive webinars offered by international experts and more than 40 on-demand lectures and three international 4-day workshops in London and Boston. This program features an innovative learning model that is structured around the needs of practising surgeons.

4. What are your 3-5 base rules/requirements/ skills/advice to the learning surgeon to become an excellent plastic surgeon like yourself?

First: Love what you do – every day.

Second: Spend the famous 10.000 in the operating room.

Third: Build a great team around you by fostering and nurturing talent.

Fourth: Care for your patients in the way you would care for someone from your own family.

Fifth: Never stop learning, be curious, embrace growing your mind.

5. Please tell us 4-5 main things what did you learn from Harvard Medical School about how to build up and manage a successful business?

1. Success and failure are mostly defined at the beginning of a business venture, not along the years
2. The greatest challenges in most businesses are not managing finance or product quality, it's about managing people
3. You need to have a vision for yourself and for your clinic, you have to learn to transport this vision to your team and to your patients
4. It is not enough to be just a great surgeon, if you don't learn the above, you may be able to work in a hospital structure, but you will inevitably fail in leading a whole department or a clinic
5. Have always a BATNA when you negotiate in business, a second option helps you to evaluate risks and chances much more objectively.

6. What are your 3-5 main best leadership strategies advise/moto, what do you follow in your organizations/team/mentoring?

You have to grow your team in all ways, and the only thing to do that is through example. You can not ask them to do/give more to your business than just their contracted hours if you don't work hard and lead through example.

People, in general, are good when you give them a purpose, a work they can identify with and be proud of does not matter if it is the facility care staff or the top-level responsible in your business. It is your responsibility to give them this purpose with your leadership decisions as best as you can. If you do so, they may not like every decision you make but they will respect you because you are just - and that's when people start to follow your vision. When you achieve that, you become a real leader, not when they give you a job with a title that says so...
