Warning: Danger of Venomous Tropical Jellyfish - Portuguese Man o' War
15-08-2015Christian Souter was stung by a jellyfish on August 10, 2015. This year is worst then last year with an epidemic of jellyfish on local beaches.
Christian was swimming just off of the Mistrall Beach in Puerto Banus and swam out ca. 300 metres working on my back-stoke when he felt this tremendous burning feeling on his right wrist and then saw a large jellyfish. The pain was the worst he has ever experienced in his life. He swam back and went straight to the pharmacy with his family who had just arrived at the beach. His right hand was shaking uncontrollably, and it started to swell and turn red. Christian started sweating, and his blood pressure increased. He was given pain killers, which did very little. The pain lasted hours and became worst.
The types of jellyfish vary largely. They have one of the most dangerous venoms in the world with the box jellyfish being the most deadly creature in existence with its sting having lethal consequences. In Australia, there are warning signs NOT to enter the water.
Christian has two young girls who were swimming in the water as at that time. He is shocked that the life guards in Marbella allow young children to enter the water. There should be warning flags displayed on the beaches showing danger of jellyfish and forbid children under 16 or so to enter the water.
There are very dangerous tropical jellyfish in the sea around the Marbella area, and nothing seems to be done about it.
