10 Minutes with DJ Lola Zapata
02-09-2014Everybody knows her, everybody loves her, but how much do you actually know about the famous Dj Lola? i-Marbella finds out!
Born in Switzerland, Lola lived all her life in Madrid, for approx. 9 years ago she moved to Estepona, and this is where she started making my first DJ sets in friends’ club, I always liked black music (funk, soul, R&B, Disco, jazz, gospel,). This was the beginning of her passion for DJing - connecting with the public and showing the ability to create a very funky atmosphere, and that every time people, dance and have fun with her music. She has been dedicated to music professionally for six years as a DJ, playing at Private Events & Clubs, pubs, private parties, and currently she is working as resident deejay in Namazake in Suite (Hotel Puente Romano) Marbella, where if anything stands, is a spectacular outdoor space where you can enjoy the exquisite, beautiful best funky music.
I Play The Music ...
1. When did you start DJing - and what or who were your early passions and influences? How did you learn?
Approximately 7 years ago Ramón gave me a chance to play in a bar Reinaldo (Estepona). He wanted to hear funk music all the time and the best way was for me to put the music, since in my house we have always played black music, soul, country, funk, rock and lot of Michael jackson, Earth wind and Fire, Anita Baker. So I taught myself, researched, made mistakes and learned and put in a lot of passion.
2. How did you start working in Suite?
I started working for Mr Daniel Shamoon, after he saw me at a private party, and my profile fit perfectly with what he was looking for the new project that is now “Namazake”.
3. How many years have you worked there? Where else do you play?
Currently I have been working in Suite for three years as a resident DJ, from Thursday til Saturday. In the summer you can find me on Sundays in Bono’s Beach and Mondays I play in La Sala in Puerto Banus.
4. What kind of music do you play?
What I like DJing is music of the 80 oldest funk, soul, r & b, although I have my romera vein, I love AC / DC.
5. What do you personally consider to be the highlights in your career?
If I have to point out something would be that I can not stop dancing when I’m playing music. I feel music so much that it is impossible not to dance when you put a great song of D-train!
6. What are currently your main challenges as a DJ?
The main challenge for me is that when I am DJing in my cabin and everyone dancing that is already a challenge.
7. Do you also produce music? Where can people listen to your music?
No, I do not produce music, but my sessions can be heard on Soundcloud - Lola Z Djeando.
8. Which other DJs do you admire and look up to?
Everyone I've met in my short dj career I really like. Obviously they are not known, not earning thousands of euros, but they have love and passion for music and these people I admire.
9. What do you do on your free time?
Usually rest from a tiring night. I am with my boyfriend, my family, my friends, and enjoy life!
10. What are your plans for the future?
Now I go on a vacation, after all that work in the summer. I will go to NY, Miami, and visit the clubs of these two wonderful cities to soak up a bit musically, and try to live in that moment!
