Santa María Polo Club organizes the Jaeger–LeCoultre Snow Polo Cup 2010 in Sierra Nevada, the first time such an event has taken place in Spain...

Los Peñones car park in Sierra Nevada was recently transformed into a snow polo field where the Jaeger-LeCoultre Snow Polo Cup 2010 was held. Although snow polo has a long tradition in St. Moritz and Klosters (Switzerland) this is the first snow polo tournament ever to be celebrated in Spain.

This unique and exclusive tournament took place against the stunning backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains on the 13th and 14th of March while the valuable sponsorship and collaboration from Jaeger Le-Coultre, BMW, Veuve Clicquot and Nespresso amongst others, added further prestige to the event.

The weekend was inaugurated with a welcome cocktail and the presentation of the kit to the teams on the 12th of March.

Teams and sponsors alike sojourned at the Hotel Meliá Sol y Nieve and were chauffeured to the tournament in BMW X1 and X6´s or could slalom down the piste directly to the event; Snow Polo – what better après ski? The logistics of such an event are no mean feat with the VIP enclosure an impressive two story, heated hospitality “tent” - which was constructed in a mere three days.

Copious amounts of Veuve Clicquot flowed in the VIP enclosure whilst ponies and players did battle in the snow. Four teams took part in the tournament; the first encounter on Saturday saw Casablanca beating Península 6 ½ to 5 in heavy mist, whilst Jaeger-LeCoultre gained their place in the final after a 10 ½ to 5 victory against the Santa María Polo Club.

The glorious weather on Sunday saw a close and exciting semi final with Península being beaten by Santa María 7 to 6. The winners of the tournament, Jaeger-LeCoultre, played consistently and won a convincing 9 to 4½ victory against Casablanca; Jack Kidd and Hernán Pieres played as an accomplished duo and were well backed up by their captain, Richard Fagan. Director of Jaeger-LeCoultre for Spain, Jacques Thomas and television presenter, Carolina Alcazar presented the trophies.

It was an outstanding tournament and congratulations to Santa María who organized a smooth and very successful event that was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. We will be looking forward to see more polo when the summer season begins in Sotogrande.
