So, I finally got identity number for foreigners, in other words, my NIE. What is a NIE? In Spanish it is the Numero de Identidad de Extranjeros which, translated, means "Identity Number for Foreigners".
Why do you need a NIE number? For example, if you want to buy a property, buy or insure a car, if you want to open a bank account or set up utility bills etc, you need it often when you live in Spain. Also, if you don't have an NIE number, tax authorities can't process annual tax payments such as income and wealth tax.
I assume all the foreign people who live in Marbella have a NIE, but if you don't have one yet, I will inform you how to apply for one. First, make a copy of your passport(but also take your passport with you), then go to the Extranjeros department of your nearest Policia Nacional station. I've heard stories how people had to go and start queuing already at 5am, well I can assure you, it's not necessary I went there around 7.45 in the morning, before they opened. People queue up and when they open at 8.30, they will hand out numbers to the first 70 people in the queue.
This paper you must take to the bank and pay!
With that number they also give you a paper that you must take to the bank, that is only a 5-minutes-walk away and I had to pay 16,16 euros. Although on the documents on the information wall it said 10,40 euros.
Anyway, after paying in the bank, I returned to the Police Station and waited another 15 minutes, when they called my number. I went in with my passport and with the photocopy of the passport and also with the payment invoice of the bank. Then I had to fill in and sign an application form and hand it back to the officer. After that they tell you when to come back. I had to come the next Monday, it usually takes 3-5 days. So then all you have to do is go pick up your NIE paper, and the easiest is to memorize it, but they also say you have to carry the A4 piece of paper with you at all times!
