4 minutes; the difference between life and death...08-02-2010
Could you save someone´s life?
“First Aid is the initial or immediate assistance given to someone who has been injured or taken ill before the arrival of qualified medical assistance”
The aims of First Aid are:
TO PRESERVE LIFE
PREVENT THE CONDITION FROM WORSENING
So often we take for granted that it always happens to someone else, however what if it doesn´t? What if you are the first person on the scene of an accident, or, one of your colleagues is bleeding profusely, or your child is blue in the face choking to death – would you know what to do? Those first 3 – 4 minutes are critical and the difference between life and death...
A sobering thought and one that got me out of bed at 06:00am on a miserable, very wet and windy morning and led me to Heart Starterz in Gibraltar. Jon Segui a veteran Ambulance Service Coordinator and Educational Development Manager for Heart Starterz, set up the company just over a year ago and in this short time, it has gone from strength to strength.
The course was clear and concise and very well organized and follows UK requirements regulated by the HSE (Health & Safety Executive), which is the governing body in the UK. We were taught by Jon Segui and Paul Watson two veterans in the Ambulance service, these dedicated guys are unsung heroes and a regular 12 hour shift has seen them delivering babies and literally dragging people out of the sea to give them the kiss of life. The course very well structured and highly interesting and, in spite of the fact that we were dealing with serious content, the boys have a great sense of humour - there was not a dull moment during the day and not for one minute did giving the kiss of life to a plastic mannequin seem ridiculous!
Both Jon and Paul were extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of First Aid and in the one day course; we went through the basics of:
What to do in an accident
Choking and how to deal with shock
There was a lot to absorb and although I came away feeling that I had learnt something, I came away wanting to know more.
Just imagine the following scenario; you are on the 14th hole and you have a heart attack, how long do you think that it will take someone to get to you, bear in mind that you have 4 minutes before your vital organs shut down and you die. Staggering statistics show that only 1% of people survive a situation like this, however with more knowledge these statistics can be greatly improved.
What was very interesting and is probably not widely appreciated is that the method of resuscitation has changed and lifesavers have discovered that it is not the kiss of life that is lifesaving, but the heart massage that is of tantamount importance. The modern recognized procedure is a series of 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths then straight back to the heart compressions, it is this technique that is essential in keeping the casualty´s condition from deteriorating.
I sincerely cannot recommend Heart Starterz enough, not only for their professionalism and the excellence of the course itself, but above all, because it is a must for everyone as this literally is a potentially lifesaving course.
Courses are aimed at businesses and individuals alike and run from 1 to 3 days and although the courses are currently based in Gibraltar, Heart Starterz is exploring the possibility of doing future courses in Marbella.
