Nicole Scherzinger:'I was an ugly duckling'
19-05-2010
She was described as a 'divine enchantress' after performing a sizzling tango on Dancing With The Stars last night. But growing up in Kentucky, Nicole Scherzinger claimed she felt like 'an ugly ducking'.
Ahead of performing her solo segment on last night's semi-final of the U.S. show, Scherzinger showed off some of her childhood photos and home videos, as her family, teacher and music industry colleagues described the Pussycat Doll.
Tipped to win the show, the 31-year-old singer and her partner Derek Hough wowed the judges with their Argentine tango and cha cha cha, landing a top score of 30 and 29 respectively. In a pre-recorded video segment ahead of their cha cha cha to Prince's Kiss, her grandmother Katherine Frederick said Scherzinger had a very 'humble upbringing', spending her early years living in a small house in Hawaii with 10 children and two grandchildren. After moving to Kentucky when she was six, Scherzinger found her exotic looks meant she struggled to fit in.
Scherzinger's father was Filipino, while her mother Rosemary was of mixed Hawaiian and Russian descent. She said: 'I did feel like the ugly ducking because I didn't look like anyone else.' Earlier in the show, Scherzinger and Hough moved judge Carrie Ann Inaba to tears with their tango.
An emotional Inaba said: 'It's been a long time on this show that I've been brought to tears by something that is just so profound. You're so amazing for all the reasons, you're dynamic when you need to be, you're explosive when you need to be, you're inward, you're outward. What you're doing is incredible.' In return, Inaba's praise made Scherzinger weep and she embraced the judge.
