The village of La Restinga has been evacuated as a result.
A new volcanic eruption off the coast of the Canary Island of El Hierro has been sending gas and ash into the air from under the sea.
The authorities have ordered the evacuation of the village of La Restinga as a result, and 51 residents of Frontera have also been moved over fears of a possible rockfall. The residents of La Restinga gathered at the local football ground to be evacuated by members of the UME Emergency Military Unit. Some are staying with family and friends and others have been taken to a students’ residency in Valverde.
A new earthquake on the Canary Island of El Hierro reached 4.4 on the Richter Scale at 8,36pm on Friday evening, resulted in evacuating 11 homes in the Las Puntas area, and once again closing the Los Roquillos road tunnel.
Some rockfalls were caused by the tremor, which was located off the coast of Frontera at a depth of 22 kms. It’s the biggest quake of more than 11,000 tremors to have hit the island since July.
