This week's fiestas will cost Spain a billion Euro
07-12-2011 Comments (1)
Some are suggesting that fiesta days are moved next to the weekend.
The ‘macropuente’ bank holidays this week, with National Fiestas on Tuesday and Thursday has been estimated to cost the country more than 1 billion €. Tuesday is Constitution Day, while Thursday is the Inmaculada.
70% of Spaniards have said that they would like to see fiesta days moved to be next to the weekend, to stop the practice of taking a ‘puente’ or bridge, when workers take the working day between the weekend and the fiesta day off.
Other Spaniards take advantage of the system and are expected to take all this week off. Workers in Spain get 22 days off a year, plus 14 fiestas, and each fiesta is estimated to cost the Spanish economy 216 million €.
