Possible new search for grave of Federico García Lorca
07-01-2012
A historian who says he has identified the spot is waiting for permission to go ahead.
A historical researcher, Miguel Caballero, author of the recently-published book, ‘The Last 13 Hours of García Lorca’, believes he knows where the remains of the Granada poet may lie and wants to carry out a new search for Lorca’s grave.
He identified the likely spot after extensive investigations and will be funding the search himself. Caballero has already commissioned a geological and archaeological study of the depressions in the land, which the experts said could indicate a grave.
The area is on private land in Alfácar, close the site which was unsuccessfully excavated in 2009 at the request of the descendants of those who are believed to have been buried with the poet during the Civil War. Caballero already has permission from the owner of the land, and is now awaiting authorisation from the local Town Hall.
The initial work, once the vegetation has been cleared away, will use ground penetrating radar to examine the land. Europa Press reports that if the results are positive, the historian will then approach the descendants of the men who were shot with Lorca, so that they may request new excavations under the Historical Memory Law.
