The Monarch was referring to the Duke of Palma, without naming him, in his Christmas message.

Speaking to the nation in his traditional Christmas message on Christmas Eve, King Juan Carlos said that justice is the same for everyone. Observers realise that he was making an allusion to the Duke of Palma, Iñaki Urgangarin, whose business interests are currently under investigation. The King said that ‘any censurable action must be acted against’. It has also been noted that the Duke and Duchess of Palma were not present for the Nocebuena dinner in the Zarzuela Palace.

The King also spent some time of the problems of the country, and said that ‘with an unacceptable number of unemployed, I want to play homage to the families’.

Juan Carlos also spoke against ETA, and said it was time for the terrorists to hand in their murdering arms.

The monarch warned that the way to economic recovery will not short or easy, and that it will demand sacrifices. He said that it was important that society as a whole assumes the implications of the moment, and knows how to respond with great generosity to the most vulnerable.

Juan Carlos appeared without sunglasses, following his recent black eye and said that he appreciated, even more if possible, the rigour and accuracy with which his son, the Prince of Asturias, accompanies him as the heir to the throne.
