Almost half of the residents of Malaga Province with access to the internet, shopped online in the last year. The under-30s are the most assiduous and are usually students or have a university degree, according to market analysts Iesa.

Those making the least internet purchases are generally over 45 with primary or secondary education. Although internet shopping is not yet widespread, people are gradually losing their fear of internet shopping, the study found. 72% of those with an internet connection say they shop online once a month, but only 6.6 % did this each week. The most popular transactions are for airline tickets and hotel, theatre and cinema reservations as well as electronic equipment and online banking.

Men tend to buy videogames and electrical goods while women prefer clothes and beauty products, the analysts found. Regardless of gender, internet shoppers prefer web-pages in Spanish and security when making online payments.

They also value guaranteed items and the promise of reimbursement if purchases were not satisfactory.The province nevertheless has a long way to go before internet shopping becomes an everyday occurrence, Iesa believes. Malagueños still prefer to touch and see the products they buy and many are deterred by having to pay by credit or debit card, something that 7.7 % say they do not own.
