David Haye could get up to 10 years in German Prison20-02-2012 Comments (1)
British boxer David Haye is wanted by German police following his news-conference brawl with fellow heavyweight Dereck Chisora on Saturday night.
German prosecutors have said that Haye is suspected of grievous bodily harm, according to BBC sport. If found guilty the crime can result in a prison sentence of six months to 10 years. The public scrap, caught on video, took place following Chisora's defeat by Vitali Klitschko in their WBC hevayweight title fight in Munich. But while Chisora was questioned and released by police following the incident, German police spokesman Gottfried Schlicht said that "We still don't know where David Haye is," according to Britain's Daily Telegraph.
Detectives believe Haye to have fled to Britain following the incident and are now relying on authorities in Haye's homeland to hunt him down.
"We have to ask the court in Munich and the court goes to Scotland Yard or wherever in the U.K.," said Schlicht, as reported by the U.K.'s Press Association. "That is likely to happen but I don't know how long the process will take. My opinion is that it should or will happen as soon as possible but I can't say whether that will take days or weeks. I don't know."
Certainly the incident represents a stain on boxing, particularly British boxing, but above all has severely damaged the reputations of both Haye and Chisora. Haye initially got up and yelled out at the news conference to air his frustrations over comments made by Klitschko's manager suggesting that Haye would no longer be granted a fight with the Ukrainian. A fight that Haye may now have ruled himself out of for good..
Haye gave up his license with the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) when he initially retired last year and it appears highly doubtful that they would now grant him one in the future. The chances of Haye being allowed to fight again in Germany, where Klitschko generally fights, are even more remote. The incident has also tarnished what was an impressive performance by Chisora in losing on points to champion Klitschko on Saturday. The BBBofC is said to be investigating whether to give a lifetime ban to Chisora, according to BBC Sport.
