The new runway, construction of which started in August 2007, will double the capacity of the airport.

The second runway comes into operation at Málaga Airport tomorrow, Tuesday, and will instantly double the current capacity.

Both runways will work at the same time, sharing the operations of takeoff and landing.

The Minister for Development, Ana Pastor, will open the runway, the construction of which started in August 2007, and which has cost 400 million €. It is 2,750m long, 45 metres wide, and has a 3,090 taxing lane and will be able to cope with latest generation plans such as the Airbus 380 and the Boeign 747-700.

The construction of the runway has forced the Málaga-Fuengirola train line to go underground, the course of the Guadalhorce river has been diverted for 1.5 km, and a new fire station has been constructed to service both runways. A full series of tests has already been carried out to obtain the AESA, State Air Safety Agency, licence.
