10 Minutes with DJ Edu Reyes05-07-2014
Edu Reyes, who is originally from Marbella, is one the best DJs in town, playing every weekend in the hottest nightclub in Marbella - Suite. i-Marbella spent 10 minutes with the talented man, to find out more about him and his passion.
1. When did you start DJing - and what or who were your early passions and influences? How did you learn?
I've always loved music, since I was very young I listened electronic music from the radio stations. My idols were: Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Axwell, Dr. Kucho ..... at the age of 14, I went to a NYE party with my cousin who is also a dj and since that night I felt something special, seeing him perform live. So I said to myself, I also want to do this! I want to make people dance, so I asked him to lend me his turntables but he said no! He said it is not a toy, but when he saw that I was very serious and I insisted, he finally helped me. So a got a dj booth in my bedroom and I started DJing. My cousin taught me how to play and I spent many hours of practicing and learning. At the age of 16, I told my cousin that I am ready to play at a club and he said he would help me, so we went to Club Comedia. This was a club in Puerto Banús, where he knew the owners, and I was given one chance. Thankfully they liked me and my djing so I started working with them. I ended up playing there for four year, and it was an amazing time. I have great memories of that place, it was a magical club.
2. How did you start working in Suite?
I have a friend who had worked in Suite and one day he told me they were looking for dj for the small bar that had opened within Suite. So I went with him and he introduced me to Daniel Shamoon, and Sr.Shamoon told me: Come tomorrow and try and we see how it goes. So I guess they liked my music and my work, because I started working there every weekend. Years later the resident dj left and asked me if I knew anyone to play in the main room, so I suggested myself and that is how I ended up in playing in Suite!
3. How many years have you worked there? Where else do you play?
I started in Suite in February 2006, so this is my eighth year, although it seems like yesterday ... The years have passed very quickly, because I work with good colleagues who are all exceptional and I have a very grateful public - I love it! I currently have two homes actually, every weekend at night I play in Suite, and since 2009 I play daytime at Ocean Club Marbella, where I am also very happy.
4. What kind of music do you play?
I love all genres of music. But I play all types of House - deep house, tech house, tribal house ... what matters is that people move and you are feeling what you're doing.
5. What do you personally consider to be the highlights in your career?
Producing music for major labels like: Urbana Recordings, Stereo Productions ... I have made a remix on Defected Records, and won a national award for remixing a hit in 2008.
6. What are currently your main challenges as a DJ?
Improving every day and bringing my style to other parts of the world, and get back to producing. I've had years where there was no inspiration because the market was not in a good place, but now the thing are beginning to change and I feel the force of return and dedicate myself to music again 100%.
7. Where can people listen to your music?
My music can be heard in Spotify, iTunes and Beatport.
8. Which other DJs do you admire and look up to?
I really like: Luciano, Chus & Ceballos, Uner, Loco Dice, D-Formation, Andrea Oliva, Alex Gomez, Miguel Picasso, Cuartero ... I have many lol.
9. What do you do on your free time?
In my spare time I like to listen to all kinds of music. I also go to the gym, walk along the beach and spend time with my loved ones.
10. What are your plans for the future?
I would like to have my own club, reactivate my record label and produce my music for good international record labels.
