A team of researchers from the UMA and UGR have found the existence of diamonds in Ronda, Jubrique and Torrox.

A team of researchers led by geologists from the University of Malaga and Granada, Maria Dolores Ruiz and Carlos Sanz de Galdeano, respectively, have confirmed scientifically the existence of diamonds in different parts of the Serrania in Ronda area in Sarchal (Ceuta).

Specifically, scientists have located it in the rocks of the municipalities Jubrique Malaga, Ronda and Torrox. The first hint of its existence was however in the area of Sarchal. About two years ago they found the first diamonds in Jubrique, which had to be subjected to various scientific tests before confirming their presence.

Its tiny size makes it possible to be seen only through powerful microscopes. In fact, the researchers detected the presence of it almost accidentally, because they were actually doing a study on the minerals of the Betic range that they have been developing for nearly five years.

Both Ruiz and Sanz de Galdeano have stressed the importance of the discovery in the geological section, which can lead to some changes on the formation of the mountains. That entry would be about 500 million years older than than previously thought. The diamonds are found within the red spots which exist only in certain rocks called garnets. It would also be the first time to have the presence of diamonds in Spain, according to Ruiz.
