Malaga Airport - Costa del Sol rail link on hold
20-04-2012With all cutbacks in the new 2012 budget Malaga Province will receive 268M euros which is half the size of last year, with much of the money is going on rail links.
The high speed railway test track in Antequera, the largest in the world, is still to be funded with 12.5 million euros and 93 million will go to the completion of the Antequera to Granada AVE.
Notably none of this funding includes the much promised and long awaited rail link from Malaga Airport along the Costa del Sol to Estepona and beyond. This means that Marbella is the only city in Spain with more than 100,000 inhabitants which does not have a railway connection. Many visitors find it hard to believe that after landing at Malaga Airport they can only go as far as Fuengirola by train.
The Ministry for Development is again to study the viability of extending the local train line from Fuengirola to Marbella which was the original idea of it being a coastal railway.
The Malaga second ring road has been completed and the new southern access to the airport is still under construction. The new northern access to the airport from the outer ring road is under discussion as is a second ring road for the east of Malaga to serve the Axarquia.
