10 Minutes With DJ and Artist Zoe Marmentini
07-02-2011 Comments (1)Zoe Marmentini (33) comes from Hungary and she is well known as a house DJ, who mostly plays in Suite. But did you know she's also a talented artist? Find out more about Zoe in this i-Marbella's interview.
1. Where were you educated?
Here in Marbella at Aloha College & The German School. I did my A-levels in England, my University Degree in Granada (Fine Arts) and various gap-years here and there, which were also, of course, very educational.
2. In which places/venues do you usually DJ on the coast?
Suite has been my resident venue - together with Edu Reyes - for the past three years. And Suite opened a venue in Riga recently, and I'm going to play there on the 29th! Other than that, I might do an odd private gig here or there.
3. What is your favourite song/album at the moment?
Right now I'm for the more vocal and sweet tunes rather than serious electro. My favourite songs are my favourites for like 5 minutes and then I swap them for something else. Right now I'll go with "Clouds across the moon" by Rah Band - remixed by Neuroxyde or, actually try this: Messe Messe by Gregor Salto.
4. What would you say is the best and the worst aspect of your job? Why?
I guess you're talking about the DJ aspect of life. Best: it's obvious, and because it's so cool. Worst: hmm maybe my worst part is trying to get there on time. I do struggle a lot with punctuality in general. It beats me how other people don't.
5. If you had to choose another profession what would it be?
I do have another profession, and they blend in together so nicely! I dedicate my non-musical time to art and design and I feel everything I do is pushed and helped on by all the other things I do. I don't get bored easily!
6. What advice would you give to a young woman, who wants to become a successful DJ in Costa del Sol? Be yourself and listen to your crowd!
7. Where would be your dream place/venue to play music?
Really, as long as the crowd follows - it's like a dream venue. I'm generally not so keen on playing in huge venues with thousands of people - I have done and I find it much more impersonal. I prefer a smaller, warmer ambience to play in.
8. Do you have any favourite events in Marbella?
Marbella has so many events throughout the year, maybe I'd go for some art: Poligono Gallery offers great & unusual events that I 've always enjoyed, I really like their perspective. Museo del Grabado also has some interesting exhibitions... I like to see things that inspire me.
9. Describe a few ways how you spend your time here?
Well I admit I'm a bit of a workaholic - I spend my time in front of my computer, be that working, thinking, planning. I also paint and involve myself in artistic projects when they sound interesting; then the weekend rolls in and I'm in Suite - playing, yes, but also... playing!
10. What is your artwork like?
Oooo, there's question I never know how to answer! I like to mix things I know with things that I imagine - contrasting real objects from popular contexts with textures and maybe even abstract compositions. It really feels like music actually! A bit of something you know, a bit of something new, a touch of something shiny and maybe a little sweet and mellow in the bottom corner. I like to leave the outcome as a surprise rather than calculate the result and strive to get there. Unless, of course, its commissioned! But both ways of working are fun.
11. What do you like the most in Marbella, besides the climate?
The fact that it's multicultural is fantastic. I was lucky to grow up here and see this as something natural, but have realized it really is a one-off!
12. Do you have a favourite area or part of the coast?
When I pull myself together to get a bit sporty, I chose to cycle along the Paseo Marítimo and I always think how great it is to have this on my doorstep. Was that a cheesy thing to say?
